Where did the English nash family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the nash family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The founding heritage of the nash family is in the Anglo-Saxon culture that once dominated in Britain. The name nash comes from the name of the ash tree. It is thought to derived from the Middle English phrase “atten ash,” meaning “at the ash.” Thus the first bearer of the surname nash no doubt lived near an ash tree.

Until the dictionary, an invention of only the last few hundred years, the English language lacked any comprehensive system of spelling rules. Consequently, spelling variations in names are frequently found in early Anglo-Saxon and later Anglo-Norman documents. One person’s name was often spelled several different ways over a lifetime. The recorded variations of nash include Nash, Naish, Nashe and others.

First found in Worcestershire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The nash were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: Gregory Nash, who settled in Salem Mass. in 1630; Anne Nash settled in Virginia in 1635; along with Edward her husband; John, Margaret, Mary, Sarah Nash all settled in Virginia in 1663.

Where did the English summers family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the summers family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?
summers is a name that dates far back into the mists of early British history to the days of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. It is derived from the baptismal name for the son of Summer, a personal name given to a child who was born in the summer. Baptismal names began to appear as surnames relatively late in the growth of the naming tradition. This is a little surprising, given the popularity of biblical figures in the Christian countries of Europe. Nevertheless, surnames derived from baptismal names grew in popularity during the Middle Ages, and have become one of the foremost sources for surnames.
Only recently has spelling become standardized in the English language. As the English language evolved in the Middle Ages, the spelling of names changed also. The name summers has undergone many spelling variations, including Somers, Sommers, Summers, Sommer, Summer, Somerton, Sommerton, Sumpton, Sumption and many more.
First found in Worcestershire where they were seated from very ancient times, as Lords of the manor of Whiteladies, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name summers were among those contributors: Sir George Somers who settled in the Somers Islands (Jamaica) in 1609; Sir George also helped colonize Maine in 1610. James Somers settled in Virginia in 1635.

First found in the borderlands between Scotland and England; the name was first borne in this region by a Strathclyde-Briton family, as revealed in records dating back to the 13th century. In such difficult times, the difficulties of raising the money to cross the Atlantic to North America did not seem so large compared to the problems of keeping a family together in Scotland. It was a journey well worth the cost, since it was rewarded with land and freedom the Scots could not find at home. The American War of Independence solidified that freedom, and many of those settlers went on to play important parts in the forging of a great nation. Richard Young and his wife, who settled in Virginia in 1623; as did Edward and Jane Young in 1636; Joseph and Margaret Young, who immigrated to New England with their two sons in 1635.

Motto Translated: Prudence excels strength.
