First found in the borderlands between Scotland and England; the name was first borne in this region by a Strathclyde-Briton family, as revealed in records dating back to the 13th century. In such difficult times, the difficulties of raising the money to cross the Atlantic to North America did not seem so large compared to the problems of keeping a family together in Scotland. It was a journey well worth the cost, since it was rewarded with land and freedom the Scots could not find at home. The American War of Independence solidified that freedom, and many of those settlers went on to play important parts in the forging of a great nation. Richard Young and his wife, who settled in Virginia in 1623; as did Edward and Jane Young in 1636; Joseph and Margaret Young, who immigrated to New England with their two sons in 1635.

First found in Berwickshire, where the Wilson family held a seat from ancient times. In their new home, Scots found land and opportunity, and some even fought for their new freedom in the American War of Independence. Some, who remained loyal to the crown went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. Early immigration and passenger lists indicate many people bearing the Wilson name: John Wilson, who settled in Virginia in 1623; Christopher Wilson, a Scotch prisoner sent to Boston in 1651; Andrew Wilson, who arrived in New England in 1651.Motto Translated: He conquers, who conquers himself.

First found in Ayrshire where they held a family seat from ancient times. The number of Strathclyde clan families sailing for North America increased steadily as the persecution continued. In the colonies, they could find not only freedom from the iron hand of the English government, but land to settle on. The American War of Independence allowed many of these settlers to prove their independence, while some chose to go to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. Scots played essential roles in the forging of both great nations. Eleanor, Elizabeth, George, Jane, William, and Mary Wallace all settled in Charles Town S.C. in 1768; Alexander Wallace settled in Georgia in 1733; Andrew, Boyd, Daniel, Edward, Francis, George, Hugh, James, John, Michael, Patrick, Robert, Samuel, Thomas, and William Wallace all settled in Philadelphia, P.A. between 1820 and 1870.Motto Translated: For liberty.

First found in Yorkshire, where the walker family was seated from ancient times. At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name walker arrived in North America very early: John Walker, Roger Walker, and Isabel Walker, who all immigrated to Virginia in 1623; Augustine Walker, who settled in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1630; James Walker, who arrived in St. Christopher in 1635.

The many spelling variations in Medieval Scottish names result from the fact that scribes in that era spelled words according to sound. Translation too, was an undeveloped science, and many names were altered into complete obscurity. Over the years Thomson has been spelled Thomson, Tomson, Tamson, Thomsoun, M’Comie and others.
First found in Ayrshire where they were seated as Lords of Kylne Kylle from about the year 1150.
To escape the uncertainties and discrimination faced in Scotland, many decided to head out for North America. Once they arrived, many Scots fought with relish in the American War of Independence; some went north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. Many ancestors of these Scots have recovered their lost national heritage in the 20th century through clan organizations and Scottish historical societies. Among the settlers to North America were: Edward Thomson arrived on the “Mayflower” at Plymouth, Mass. in 1620; Andrew Thomson settled in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, in 1801; Dugald Thomson settled in New York in 1739.

First found in Roxburghshire, where a family seat was held on the lands of Ballendan at the head of the Ale water in that county. Some of the Boernician-Scottish clan families who came to North America were Loyalists who went north to Canada after the American War of Independence. Families on both sides of the border went on to found two of the world’s great nations. This century, families with Scottish roots have rediscovered their heritage through highland games and clan societies. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families reveals a number of immigrants bearing the name Scott or a variant listed above: Nicholas Scot, who arrived in Virginia in 1606, fourteen years before the “Mayflower”; Elizabeth Scot settled in the Barbados in 1667; Goodwife Scott arrived in Virginia in 1623.

Origin Displayed: English
Before English spelling was standardized a few hundred years ago, spelling variations of names were a common occurrence. Elements of Latin, Norman French and other languages became incorporated into English throughout the Middle Ages, and name spellings changed even among the literate. The variations of the surname Russell include Russell, Russel and others.
First found in Dorset where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.
In England at this time, the uncertainty of the political and religious environment of the time caused many families to board ships for distant British colonies in the hopes of finding land and opportunity, and escaping persecution. The voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, though, and many arrived in North America sick, starved, and destitute. Those who did make it, however, were greeted with greater opportunities and freedoms that they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make important contributions to the young nations in which they settled. Early immigration records have shown some of the first Russells to arrive on North American shores: Joe Russell settled in Virginia in 1635; John Russell settled in Virginia in 1623; Simon Russell settled in Boston in 1631; William and Walter Russell settled in Virginia in 1607.
